Spoiler alert: it costs more than the UCS Death Star

LEGO YouTuber builds functional SMART Play lightsaber – and it's not cheap

A LEGO YouTuber has created a functional lightsaber using LEGO SMART Bricks, but the cost is eye-watering.

Brick Science, a YouTuber known for building inventive LEGO creations, collaborated with the LEGO Group in an Instagram post to design the Star Wars weapon using the new SMART Brick system.

This is the second time Brick Science has built a LEGO lightsaber. He first created one in March 2023 using LED lights and a LEGO Technic frame.

With the introduction of SMART Play earlier this year, however, he has now produced a version made entirely from LEGO elements.

Using 16 SMART Bricks, 16 SMART Tags and additional pieces, Brick Science designed a sturdy lightsaber that lights up and plays sound effects.

While the build looks and sounds cool, the biggest challenge is the cost.

While it is possible to source 16 SMART Bricks from a combination of cheaper sets, Brick Science needed the lightsaber SMART Tag, which is currently exclusive to 75427 SMART Play: Throne Room Duel & A-Wing. The tag is required for the lightsaber to trigger the correct sounds.

As a result, recreating the build would require eight copies of the most expensive LEGO Star Wars SMART Play set.

The 962-piece set retails for £139.99 / $159.99 / €159.99, meaning eight copies would cost £1,119.92 / $1,279.92 / €1,279.92. That figure does not include the additional pieces needed for the build or, in some regions, sales tax.

While few fans are likely to build a LEGO lightsaber at that price, the option is technically there if you have the funds to do so.

If you would like to pick up one of the official LEGO Star Wars SMART Play sets, whether to build your own lightsaber or simply add one to your collection, they are available now from LEGO.com.
